Why you crave carbs before your period
It's day 23 of your cycle and you would genuinely fight someone for a bagel. You're not broken. Your serotonin is.
The serotonin connection
In the late luteal phase, estrogen drops. Estrogen helps produce serotonin. Less estrogen = less serotonin = your brain starts looking for other ways to boost it.
Carbohydrates trigger insulin, which clears competing amino acids from your blood, allowing tryptophan to cross the blood-brain barrier and convert to serotonin. Your body isn't craving carbs because it's weak. It's craving carbs because it knows exactly what it needs to fix its serotonin.
Your metabolic rate actually increases
During the luteal phase, your basal metabolic rate rises by 100-300 calories per day. You burn more energy at rest. The hunger isn't imagined.
A 2016 study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition confirmed this: women eat an average of 238 more calories per day during the luteal phase. Their bodies need it. The problem isn't the craving. The problem is that nobody told them this was normal.
What to eat (not what to avoid)
Complex carbs that release slowly: sweet potatoes, oats, brown rice, whole grain bread. These give you the serotonin boost without the blood sugar crash.
Dark chocolate. Magnesium + tryptophan + tastes good. A few squares, not a whole bar. Though a whole bar won't ruin anything either.
Bananas + peanut butter. Tryptophan + complex carbs in one snack.
The worst thing you can do is restrict carbs during this phase. You'll feel worse, sleep worse, and probably end up binging anyway. Just eat the carbs. Choose the better ones when you can.
What this has to do with training
If you're eating low-carb and training hard during your luteal phase, you're fighting your biology on two fronts. Your body is burning through glycogen faster AND producing less serotonin.
Eat more carbs this week. Especially around workouts. Your performance will be better, your mood will be better, and your recovery will be better. This isn't cheating on your diet. It's fueling your cycle.
