Why some gym days feel impossible
You crushed your workout on Tuesday. Same weights, same exercises on Thursday. Couldn't finish. What happened between Tuesday and Thursday? Probably nothing you did wrong.
It's your hormones
Estrogen and progesterone fluctuate on a cycle that lasts about 28 days. These aren't just "period hormones." They affect muscle contraction strength, glycogen storage, body temperature, pain tolerance, and mood.
When estrogen is high (around days 10-15), you feel strong, motivated, and recover fast. When progesterone dominates (days 17-28), you feel sluggish, sore, and irritable. This is normal physiology, not a motivation problem.
The numbers
Women can experience up to a 15% variation in strength output across their cycle. That's the difference between a 135 lb squat and a 155 lb squat. If your program doesn't account for that, you're going to have "bad days" that are actually just wrong-day programming.
Recovery also changes. The same session that takes 24 hours to recover from in your follicular phase might take 48-72 hours during your luteal phase. So when you feel "overtrained" before your period, you might just be under-recovered.
What you can do about it
Track your cycle alongside your workouts for two months. Just note the day of your cycle next to your training log. Patterns will emerge fast.
Plan your hardest sessions around days 8-16. Dial back during days 20-28. You don't need a fancy app for this. A calendar works.
Or use something like Lune that does it automatically. Either way, the point is: stop blaming yourself for normal biology.
It's not just you
The 2024 Strava Year in Sport report showed that women's workout frequency drops by 14% in the week before their period. Not because they're lazy. Because their training doesn't account for their cycle, so they feel like failures and skip.
Imagine if the workout adjusted instead of the person. That's what training with your cycle actually means.
Train with your cycle, not against it
Lune adjusts your workouts to your menstrual cycle automatically. Same program, smarter timing.
