PMS and exercise
A few days before your period, everything is louder. Cramps, bloating, mood swings, cravings. Going to the gym sounds terrible. But it might be the best thing you can do.
Exercise as PMS treatment
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists lists exercise as a first-line treatment for PMS. Not supplements. Not medication. Exercise.
Moderate aerobic activity (walking, cycling, swimming) for 30 minutes reduces PMS symptoms in most women within 2-3 cycles of consistent practice. It works by increasing endorphins, improving circulation, and helping regulate the serotonin drop that causes mood symptoms.
What works
Walking. Seriously. A 30-minute walk does more for PMS than sitting on the couch. It reduces bloating by stimulating digestion and lymphatic drainage.
Moderate strength training at lighter weights. The endorphin release helps with mood. Keep it to 60-70% of your max.
Yoga, specifically poses that open the hips and lower back. Pigeon pose, child's pose, reclined butterfly. These directly target the areas that cramp.
Swimming. The water pressure actually helps with bloating. The cool temperature feels good when you're running hot.
What makes PMS worse
High-intensity training when you're already depleted. HIIT spikes cortisol, and your cortisol is already elevated pre-menstrually. Adding more stress on top of stress doesn't cancel out. It compounds.
Skipping exercise entirely. Counterintuitive, but complete rest often makes PMS symptoms worse because you lose the endorphin and circulation benefits.
Overdoing caffeine pre-workout. Caffeine increases anxiety, breast tenderness, and disrupts sleep. All things that are already worse during PMS. Switch to half-caf or green tea this week.
The 20-minute rule
If you don't want to train, commit to 20 minutes. Walk, light yoga, bodyweight exercises, whatever. If you still feel terrible after 20 minutes, stop. No guilt.
Most of the time, you'll feel better by minute 10 and finish the session. The hardest part is starting. The endorphins kick in fast.
