Follicular phase workouts

Days 6 through 13 of your cycle. Estrogen is climbing, energy is coming back, and your body is genuinely ready to work. This is the phase most fitness apps ignore completely.

Why this phase is different

Estrogen is rising steadily. This does a few things: it improves muscle protein synthesis, increases pain tolerance, and makes your tendons slightly more elastic. You recover faster. You feel stronger. Because you literally are.

A 2020 study in the European Journal of Applied Physiology found that women who trained harder during their follicular phase gained more muscle than those who trained the same intensity throughout their cycle. Same exercises, same volume. Just timed differently.

How to train

This is your green light phase. Progressive overload, higher volume, compound lifts.

Aim for 3-5 strength sessions this week. Push your working weight up by 2.5-5%. Add an extra set if you're feeling good. Your body can handle more volume right now than any other time in your cycle.

Great exercises for this phase: barbell squats, deadlifts, bench press, pull-ups, hip thrusts. Basically your heavy hitters.

What most women get wrong

They train the same intensity every week. Week 1 through week 4, same weights, same reps. That's like driving the speed limit on an empty highway. You're leaving gains on the table.

Your follicular phase is the highway. Use it. Dial it back later in your cycle. This isn't about working harder overall. It's about working harder when your body responds best.

Recovery and nutrition

You recover faster this week, but don't skip sleep. Your body is still building muscle overnight.

Protein needs stay the same (0.7-1g per pound of bodyweight). Add more complex carbs around your workouts since your body uses glucose more efficiently right now. Good pre-workout meal: oats with protein powder and banana about 90 minutes before training.
